They typically have white faces, chests, and legs. The Traditional Calico cat breeds are a tri-color cat, with white, black, and orange patches They are also called Tortie-and-White cats, since they look similar to a Tortoise shell, except white. Tabby kittens will have a range of colored spots or stripes on their coat. Calico Tabby Cat: What does a calico tabby cat look like. Torbie kittens will have a tabby pattern with brown, black, and red spots. Besides, there are eyeliner stripes under the eyes. On the tail and legs, these stripes are horizontal. Even, vertical stripes run parallel on the feline’s body coat, sometimes they can be broken into spots or dashed dark lines. Does either mom or the suspected dad have white spots? One of them must have had white spots to produce a calico kitten. Tortoiseshell kittens have patches of black and orange, whereas calico kittens have patches of black, orange, and white. Striped, a.k.a.mackerel, or sometimes referred to as tiger is the most common tabby pattern. Both calico and dilute calico cats are rather unusual in that they are usually (99) female. Calicos, on the other hand, have a white. That gene is also codominant, so a cat with one dose has some spotting, a cat with 2 doses has a lot more white spots. In some instances, the orange and black areas of the coat can be faded to creams and greys or shades in between, and in these instances, the cats are described as being dilute calico cats. Many people mistake tortoiseshell cats with calico cats because of their similar coat colors. I'm more concerned about where the white spotting came from. So it's possible for a tabbie to be, e.g., brown, but have the tortie color genetically if most cells had the orange gene switched off during that random process. This imbalance is solved by cells randomly switching off one of those Xs in a female early in development. Now, if you think about it, a female has twice as many X chromosome genes as a male (the Y is tiny and carries many fewer genes). Only one in every 3,000 calico cats are males, which is roughly 0.1 percentit’s a freak incident in nature. She is an orange/nonorange white-spotted tabby in genetic terms!! You’ve always assumed the calico cat that sits in your neighbor’s window is a she. Your calico should show what kind of tabby she is on her orange patches, if they are large enough. Tabby brings in yet another set of genes (more, in fact). Be sure to look at my answer to "orange females" as it relates to your question.
